For years, lace and tulle were associated with certain product groups. Yet a fabric's identity is defined not only by where it is used, but by how it is cut, which form it is paired with and how it sits on the body.

That is also our starting point at JEU JEU as we bring lace and tulle into men's underwear. Instead of adapting an existing form as it is, we approach fabric, pattern and details together.

Why does the pattern matter?

In underwear, even a difference of a few centimetres can change how a piece looks and sits on the body.

The shape of the front, the waist-to-hip ratio, the band width, the leg opening and the position of the seams all work as a whole. Especially with stretchy, fine fabrics, the pattern needs to be designed together with the fabric.

That is why the same lace or tulle can look one way in a brief, another in a boxer and completely different in a thong or jockstrap.

Tulle and lace are not the same thing

Tulle is a fine, lightweight fabric with a net structure. Depending on its construction, it can offer different degrees of sheerness.

Lace, on the other hand, becomes a more visible part of the design itself through its pattern and texture. The density of the pattern can make some areas look more covered and others more open.

In JEU JEU collections, these materials are sometimes used on their own and sometimes combined with different fabrics and details.

Why does stretch matter?

In underwear, fabric shouldn't just look good; it should also move with the body.

The stretch of the fabric, the construction of the bands and the placement of the seams directly affect how a piece sits on the body. Especially with fine textures such as lace and tulle, it is important that the material and the pattern suit each other.

Small details, a big difference

The character of an underwear design is often shaped by small details:

  • The pattern and placement of the lace
  • The sheerness of the tulle
  • The width of the waist and leg bands
  • Cutting angles
  • The position of the seams
  • The combination of colour and fabric

Some of these may not be noticeable at first glance. But together they create the overall look of the piece and its form on the body.

What to look for when choosing?

When choosing a lace or tulle piece, look not only at the image but also at the cut, the fabric and the size chart.

Lace and tulle do serious design work. But that doesn't stop you from having a little fun wearing them.
