When choosing underwear, the cut determines how a piece sits on the body just as much as fabric and colour do.

A brief and a thong made from the same fabric can look completely different. A boxer gives the fabric a wider surface, while a jockstrap takes much of its form from its band structure.

So what are the main differences between them?

Briefs

A brief keeps the classic underwear structure at the waist and front while leaving the legs free.

Coverage: Medium
Key feature: A balanced cut and an open leg.

As the width of the sides changes, even the same brief shape can take on a different character. Narrow sides create a more defined form, while wider sides let more of the fabric show.

With lace and sheer fabrics, the texture of the fabric becomes an important part of the brief's form.

Thong (Men's String)

A thong is a cut with minimal coverage at the back.

Coverage: Low
Key feature: A minimal back and a defined front/side form.

The shape of the front panel, the width of the side bands and the fabric used significantly change the look of a thong.

When materials such as lace and tulle are used, the fabric and the cut stand out together.

Boxers

A boxer has a wider fabric surface than the other cuts.

Coverage: High
Key feature: A wider design area for fabric and pattern.

Boxers aren't only about classic cotton styles. Lace, tulle and sheer textures show more across a wide surface, and the fabric can take centre stage in the design.

That is why the same material can create a very different effect as a boxer than as a brief or a thong.

Jockstraps

The structure of a jockstrap is clearly different from the other cuts. The front creates the form, the back is left open and the design is completed with bands.

Coverage: Open back
Key feature: Band structure.

Different constructions such as single-band and double-band can change how a jockstrap looks on the body.

In the JEU JEU collection, we treat the jockstrap as a design form of its own, where lace, colour and band details can be used together.

So which one should you choose?

There is no single right answer. It depends on the form you want.

Choose briefs for a balanced, classic cut, a thong for minimal coverage, boxers to show fabric and pattern across a wider surface, and a jockstrap for an open back and band details.

The right size matters as much as the cut. Before choosing, we recommend checking your measurements against the Size Chart.
